Vibration Reduction Performance

As I have already pointed out earlier, the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm VR comes with optical image stabilization that Nikon calls “Vibration Reduction”. Per Nikon, the VR mechanism is supposed to provide up to 4.5 stops of compensation when shooting hand-held, which is basically on par with other modern Nikon lenses with VR.

When shooting with the Nikon Z50, I rarely relied on the tripod, because I wanted to test how good VR on this lens really is. Most of the images in this review (aside from ones shoot at very long exposures of 1 sec and longer) were captured hand-held. Here is an image I captured at 1/3 of a second at 50mm (75mm full-frame equivalent):

This works out to a bit over four stops of compensation with the reciprocal rule, which is pretty impressive. I had to bump up ISO to 400 in the above case since there was very little ambient light to work with.

Recommendations

Get one! More specifically, get one as part of a kit as a promotional item for very little extra money. This is one of Nikon’s Best Lenses, and even better, it’s tiny and inexpensive and focuses fast and super close.

I got my 16-50mm at B&H, where it also comes in silver. (Actually I got the kit with both the 16-50mm and 50-250mm lenses). I’d also get it at Adorama, at Amazon, at Crutchfield or at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay. It also comes as part of a kit at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.

I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap so I’m always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either.

Use the excellent and inexpensive B+W 46mm 010 , or splurge on the multicoated B+W 010M or use a multicoated Hoya filter.

If you want a fancy filter, go for the LEICA 13033 E46 UVa II in black, the LEICA 13034 E46 UVa II in silver or the Fujifilm PRF-46 Protector Filter.

All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they’ll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Filters last a lifetime of more, so there’s no need to cheap out on them. The basic Hoya 46mm UV is honestly all you need.

Lens Handling and Build Quality

Being a budget, consumer-grade kit lens, the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm VR has an all-plastic construction – from its filter thread and the lens barrel, all the way to its mount. Although the plastic seems to be quite durable, it does not feel as thick as plastic that Nikon uses on its full-frame Z-mount lenses. That’s expected, since Nikon engineers were probably doing what they could to shed off as much weight as possible – after-all, this is the kit Nikon wants to bundle with its mirrorless DX cameras.

When the lens is in its retracted position, turning on the camera shows a prompt that asks to extend the lens before shooting. Rotating the zoom ring counter-clockwise (when viewed from the top back) extends the lens barrel considerably, and once you reach 16mm, the lens clicks into place, allowing the camera to shoot. Similar to the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S, you can gain a few millimeters of focal length below 16mm by slowly rotating the lens before it clicks into place, at the expense of image quality (especially in the corners). Zooming towards 24-26mm reduces the lens barrel to its shortest physical size, which extends again starting from around 35mm. The lens barrel is slighly shorter at 50mm compared to 16mm. The zoom ring is quite smooth and comes to a hard stop at 50mm. There does not seem to be any play in either direction.

Thanks to the focus-by-wire design of all Nikon Z mount lenses, the focus ring is actually a programmable control ring. By default, it adjusts lens focus, but you can set it up to control lens aperture or exposure compensation through the camera menu.

The plastic lens mount has a total of four locking ears, which do a good job of keeping the lens tightly attached to the camera body. Although there is no rubber gasket on the back of the lens to keep dust off the camera mount, the lens barrel is a little extruded, which helps seal the lens against the mount. Not ideal, but it works quite well in keeping dust particles from entering the camera.

The back of the lens has a visible glass element that stays in place when zooming in or out, and there are no visible holes that show the inner parts of the lens. Although the lens is not weather-sealed like most other high-quality Z lenses, all components seem to fit quite tightly, which should reduce the chance of dust and moisture getting into the lens. I used the lens extensively when traveling in Jordan and Turkey, and I did not notice any visible dust particles on the front or rear lens elements.

The front element of the lens is easy to reach and clean. The 46mm filter thread is quite normal for a lens of this size. I used a rather thick 46mm B+W polarizing filter that I owned for many years, which I was able to mount and dismount easily when shooting in the field. As discussed in the Vignetting section of this review, the thickness of the polarizing filter did not make the corners look darker, even at 16mm position.

Due to the collapsible design, the lens does not come with a lens hood.

Sharp Results

I tested the Z 16-50mm with the 20.9MP Z 50 and software from Imatest. At 16mm f/3.5 it delivers excellent resolution (2,580 lines) averaged across the frame. Edges and corners are quite soft, though—you’ll want to set the lens somewhere between f/5.6 and f/11 for the shots where edge and corner resolution matters. Average resolution also improves—the lens nets outstanding contrast, as good as you can expect from the Z 50’s sensor—through f/11. Diffraction slightly softens images at f/16 and f/22.

At the midpoint of the zoom, around 35mm, the maximum aperture is f/5.3. Resolution is still excellent (2,630 lines), with edge performance that lags behind, but is still pretty good (1,975 lines). Again, for landscape shots, f/8 and f/11 offer the best resolution from center to edge, with excellent performance through the frame. The aperture narrows all the way to f/36 at this focal length, but results are almost soft focus (1,220 lines).

At the 50mm setting, the maximum aperture is just f/6.3. Aside from a loss of light gathering, though, results are just about the same as at 35mm. Simply put, the lens has no problem delivering as much resolution as the Z 50’s sensor can manage. That said, it’s by no means a camera that leads its class in resolution—Canon offers similar models with 32.5MP chips, and you can only imagine that Nikon will want to better its rival in the future.

Images show no barrel or pincushion distortion, and while you may notice a slight vignette at 16mm f/3.5, it’s not an issue when zoomed or when the aperture is narrowed. It’s possible to turn off vignette correction, which nets a more visible effect at 16mm. You may like it for environmental portraits and other shots where you want a natural frame to help isolate your subject.

Collapsible Design

The DX 16-50mm is a collapsible lens—its optics retract into the barrel when not in use. When attached to the Z 50, I’m able to carry the pair in the pocket of a winter coat without a problem. The lens itself measures 1.3 by 2.8 inches when collapsed, weighs just 4.8 ounces, and supports 46mm front filters.

The compact design omits a lens hood, but I didn’t have issues with flare, even when the sun was right at the edge of the frame. Apart from the optical glass, construction is all plastic, but it’s on the higher end of quality for the material. Even so, I would have preferred to see Nikon include a metal lens mount.

Similar Products

Nikon says the lens has the same level of dust and splash protection as the Z 50 and many of its other sub-$1,000 camera models. I’d feel comfortable using it in light precipitation, but the sealing isn’t on the same level as full-frame lenses and cameras.

There are two control rings on the lens. The zoom is further forward. It turns freely from 16-50mm, but offers some resistance when moving in and out of the collapsed position. Thankfully there’s no lock switch to deal with—you just need to apply a little torque.

The manual focus ring sits farther back. While you’ll likely opt for autofocus most of the time, it’s good that it’s comfortable to reach. The focus response changes with the speed you turn the ring—a quicker twist makes a more dramatic change in focus, and you’ll use slow adjustment for precise changes.

You can also use the ring as an additional control, with the option to adjust EV or lens aperture. Unfortunately, the ring is just a little too sensitive. I found it hard to make third-stop EV or aperture adjustments without taking care to turn the ring ever so slightly. This is an issue across the Z line, and one that I hope Nikon is able to address via firmware updates.

The macro focus capability is modest. The lens focuses as close as 7.9 inches, netting 1:5 life-size macro magnification when zoomed all the way in. It’s pretty typical, just about matching what similar lenses for Fujifilm and Sony systems can do. Nikon’s take does minimize focus breathing, a change in angle of view when adjusting focus, which is desirable for video work.

Image stabilization is beneficial for both video and still imaging. It smooths out jittery motion in handheld footage, and makes it possible to get handheld shots at longer shutter speeds, so you can blur motion or work at a lower ISO. It’s included in the lens, a good thing as the Z 50 body doesn’t have a stabilized sensor.

This 16-50mm lens is absolutely brilliant. It’s tiny, weightless, collapses for carrying, , has great image stabilization (VR), and is optically flawless.

It’s so good you ought to get a Z50 just so you can use it!

Just turn the focus ring at any time for instant manual-focus override.

I got my 16-50mm at B&H, where it also comes in silver. (Actually I got the kit with both the 16-50mm and 50-250mm lenses). I’d also get it at Adorama, at Amazon, at Crutchfield or at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay. It also comes as part of a kit at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.

Nikon’s first normal zoom for DX Z cameras, which when introduced, is only the Z50.

Начнём с теста ISO. Здесь по традиции приведу результаты синтетического тестирования матрицы в программе RawDigger и заодно сравним показатели с Z50. Итак, смотрим:

График результатов синтетического теста матриц Z fc и Z50 полностью подтверждает, что здесь они одинаковые. Таким образом, мы можем подтвердить, что обе камеры построены на одинаковой платформе. Но как мы уже выяснили выше, некоторые преимущества у Z fc всё же есть.

Первый заметный шум появляется на ISO800. Вплоть до ISO3200 шум монохромный, зерно мелкое и не влияет на детализацию. Даже ISO6400 можно считать рабочим. Работу на более высоких значениях лучше избегать и использовать их только в экстремальных условиях съёмки.

Следует отметить один момент – здесь доступны только два расширенных значения ISO 102400 и 204800, тогда как на Z50 можно установить 64507 и 81274.

Динамический диапазон Nikon Z fc

Поскольку платформа у Z50 и Z fc одинаковая, ожидать каких-либо отличий от результатов теста динамического диапазона не стоит. Но всё же давайте посмотрим на что способна Z fc.

Вытягивание трёх ступеней даёт небольшой цветной шум в тёмных участках кадра. Четыре ступени – шумы начинают проявляться уже и в светлых участках, проявляются серьёзные шумы. В целом запас в тенях около 3,5-4 ступеней, что довольно неплохо для кроп-камеры.

С пересветом в одну ступень камера справляется на отлично. Два ступени уже дают потерю в полутонах. При вытягивании трёх ступеней есть заметная потеря в цветах, новые детали не проявляются. Таким образом, рабочий запас в светах где-то полторы ступени, что также является неплохим показателем.

Nikon Z fc для видео

Для съёмки видео Z fc имеет отдельный режим – так устроены все камеры Z. Это удобно, потому как для каждого режимы мы можем выставить собственные настройки баланса белого, Picture Control, D-lighting и т. д. Кнопка записи работает только если рычаг фото/видео переведён в положение видео. К слову, в режиме фото кнопка записи является функциональной и на неё можно запрограммировать на определённую функцию. 

Nikon Z fc обладает стандартными возможностями съёмки видео для современной беззеркалки. Это 4K с частотой 30/25/24 кадра в секунду. Запись 4K происходит со всей площади сенсора. Битрейт в примере ниже составляет 124,1 Мбит/с, что очень неплохо. 

Автофокус работает без каких-либо проблем. В режиме видео теперь стала доступна детекция лиц и глаз человека, а также морд животных, включая новую широкую зону L. 

Помимо прочего, в настройках можно установить скорость работы автофокуса, фокуспикинг и отображение засветки. К слову, фокуспикинг работает не только в видео, но и в фото в режиме ручного фокуса MF.

Especially with a plastic lens like this, it’s critical to buy only from an , since they ship from automated warehouses where no shifty salesmen or other customers ever getting to touch your new lens before it ships. While new $5 CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and bottles of milk and drinking water are sealed and quite obvious if anyone’s opened them, paradoxically Nikon doesn’t bother sealing anything, so your only insurance is to buy only from a .
