Chromatic Aberration

Area Cropped for CA Comparison

The shot above indicates the area that I crop for the CA comparison.

Corner CA

Corner CA Comparison

The SEL50F18 shows some purple fringing at its widest open and F2. Stopping down to F2.8 will eliminate all the color fringing, and no more color fringing is visible until F22.

Center CA

Center CA Comparison

SEL50F18 center CA performance is the same as its corner CA performance. The high contrast area in the center exhibits purple fringing at its widest open and F2 while all the color fringing are gone once it is stopped down to F2.8 and onward.

The SEL50F18 does an excellent job of its chromatic aberration control as well. The visible color fringing is minimal and only spotted at its widest open and F2.

Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM

The growing range of compatible A-mount lenses for both cameras now includes the quiet, bright DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM standard zoom with 16mm wide angle coverage that’s ideal for both portrait and everyday shooting.

The high-performance lens features a dust- and moisture-resistant design, and offers a zoom range of approximately 3x range at constant wide F2.8 aperture. Optical performance is assured by aspherical glass and three ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lens elements to minimize aberration at all focal lengths. An internal Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) drive enables fast, quiet autofocus.

The SAL1650 lens will also be sold separately for about $700 this October at Sony retail stores.

    Super lens for my a6000.

The real zoom length of ca.80-315 is very useful. I use the Zeiss 18-135 on my a6400. In that way with some overlapping, I can choose which camera I take out and have great versatility one way or the other.

    Decent build and image quality.
    Slow autofocus

So I deliberated a bit to add my 2 cents to the fray. I chimed in because no one mentioned slow autofocus speed with this lens.
Like others stated this zoom lens can be a steal — if you get it for less than $200. It produces decent image quality. However, it does have a relatively shallow depth of field when zoomed in, so keep that in mind.
On my A6300 the autofocus is painfully slow compared to the other lens I tried, including the ‘el chipo’ 16-50 bundled lens, the SEL 28F20 prime, and the SEL1670Z (the Zeiss co-branded zoom, which itself isn’t the fastest autofocus lens either).
I found an open-box on eBay from a major East Coast camera store for about $140, and after redeeming by eBay bucks I ended up paying much less than one hundred greenbacks so I have no regrets. But I wanted to pont out the autofocus speed because it clearly disqualifies this lens from any fast-action photography.

Not F4 ;) not much for this loooow price

For 199 it’s a steal. Comes with excellent hood. The OSS works flawless. IQ is very good on the NEX6. Would very much like F4 version for 3x this price ;)

Metal adds durability, IQ is strong throughout. OSS is very effective, Price is VG, light
No focus marks, rather long for NEX cameras

Lens is an excellent ‘add’ to the original kit lens. Outperforms other zooms in this price range (much more expensive zooms are better for 2x price). Light and durable

Sharp, light weight, small, excellent mechanical quality and super stabiliation
Slow aperture, still looks big on a NEX body

I bought this for detail architectural shots and keeping distance from my subjects.
Very sharp in the middle less in the corners but still very good.
Color and contrast is about as good as on the 50 1.8 OSS which is great.
Mechanical it has a real high end feel while keeping the weight low.
It is a telezoom and therefore relatively LONG especially on a NEX body. It does keep it`s balance well on a NEX 7.
The OSS of this lens is as good as it gets and comparible to expensive IS lenses from canon.
Note that this lens costs less as a whole than the IS upgrade on most canon lenses, about halve actually. That makes it a steal.
It has a slow aperture starting at 4.5 and going to 6.3 at the long end. It doesn`t give you much bokeh to look at.
The bokeh is nothing special but not bad.
It`s a very good lens at an incredible price. Buy it!

Recommendations

This little stabilized lens is great at as a short tele and portrait lens. With both and a fast aperture, you’re prepared for anything.

Consider this lens if your camera has no built-in stabilizer, however if you have a full-frame camera or if you have a built-in stabilizer (see All Sony Cameras Compared for which have in-camera stabilization), get the newer and less expensive Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 instead. The FE 50mm f/1.8 is unstabilized but sharper at large apertures, while this E OSS lens has a built-in stabilizer.

I’d get my 50/1.8 OSS in silver at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or in black at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.

I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear, otherwise I leave a clear protective filter on my lens at all times instead of a cap so I’m ready to shoot instantly.

The very best protective filter is the Multicoated Hoya HD 49mm which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints.

For less money, the B+W 49mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated B+W and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD is the toughest and the best.

Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt.

This junk-free website’s biggest source of support is when you use those or any of when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. Sony does not seal its boxes in any way, so never buy at retail or any other source not on since you’ll have no way of knowing if you’re missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, store demo or used lens. I use the stores I do because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no one gets to touch your new lens before you do. Buy only from the for the best prices, service, return policies and selection.

Product Description

E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Standard Zoom Lens

This 27mm wide angle to 82.5mm medium telephoto equivalent (35mm full frame format) range in a compact 3x E-mount zoom that is suitable for landscapes, snapshots, portraits, and more. Built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) provides approximately a four-stop image stabilization advantage, and an internal drive motor ensures smooth, quiet autofocus and aperture operation.

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Aspherical lens elements

Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality.

Distance encoder

The distance encoder plays an integral part in ADI flash metering, which delivers high precision flash metering that is unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject. During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene.

Lens-based optical image stabilization

Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Internal focusing

Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.

Look & Feel

Sony recently brought us a new black version of the SEL50F18, but the lens I got is the original silver version.

SEL50F18 with Lens Hood

The SEL50F18 is similar to my favorite Sony SEL24F18Z (the review here), but it gives me a much lighter feel (it actually does). The lens hood is the typical round shape instead of the petal shape we saw with SEL24F18Z and SEL35F18 (the review here).

SEL50F18 attached on NEX-6

The aluminum alloy finished on the lens barrel gives the lens a premium look. Holding it in my hand, I feel it is more solid than the plastic-ish SEL35F18, but it still cannot match the rock-solid SEL24F18Z.

Sharpness (Infinity)

Area Cropped for Sharpness Comparison

The image above indicates the area that I cropped for the sharpness comparison.

Corner Sharpness

Corner Sharpness Comparison

The corner sharpness of SEL50F18 shows a delightful result from its widest open until F 16, while the corner sharpness at F 22 has significantly dropped.

Center Sharpness

Center Sharpness Comparison

The center sharpness of the SEL50F18 also performs similarly to its corner sharpness. Center sharpness does a great job from its widest open until F 16, while the center sharpness at F 22 has dropped significantly.

The SEL50F18 has impressed me for its sharp performance. It is rare to see a lens that provides comparable sharpness performance (in a good way) from its widest open to the end (exclude the F 22).

I’d get mine at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H, at Crutchfield or used at eBay. It also comes in black at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H, at Crutchfield or used at eBay.

    stopped down fair sharpness
what a terrible lens full of CAs — 18 mm not to use wide open

This brand is sold by public relation and its names reputation — but the results are not fitted to the name and its over-rated standard lenses !
    O/+ fair sharpness, stopped down
-/O this lens has a big CA problem
    — — terrible CAs wide open at 18mm
It is the worst standard lens of all brands, unfortunally. Not for posters, for beginners images up to 20 x 30 cm — it’s okay !
What may be the purpose of the manufactorer?
    1. to buy a well known SONY camera
2.to buy a much more expensive better SONY lens afterwards — this is good marketing strategy — but not equivalent to the fine, excellent Sony bodies !!!
PS. For test images «elimination of CAs» is switched on in program.

Very nice aluminium design, versatile also for video and good OSS
    Soft, mediocre contrast,slow

I got this lense as a kit lens with my body and kept it for video and OSS functionality.
This is my least used nex lens, it`s practical for video shooting but foto`s show the apparent flaws of this nice kit lens.
It`s as slow as any kit so nothing special there.
It`s just not sharp enough to resolve the resolution of the nex 7 or any other nex.
It still makes nice pictures if you are not that critical and print small. The colors are nice and natural. The contrast is just good enough but nothing special.
If you postprocess good results can be had with this lens.
I use it mainly for video because of the excellent OSS which gives a steady picture, also the resolution is not such a problem with video.
As a kit lens it`s better than average and i would recommend it.
It looks and feels sturdy with it`s all aluminium barrel. It also seems a lot better made than most kit lenses.

Metallic construction, good IQ, useful zoom range, reasonable cost, quiet/small/light, consistent with NEX small-camera motif.
Somewhat lower IQ than Alpha version, MF isn’t ‘direct’, not very fast fstop

Nice starter lens for NEX. CDAF functions VASTLY improve after NEX3 firmware 5.0 (different numbers for each NEX). Still not for fast-action photos, though. Good for basic NEX video, too.

fast and silent AF, decently sharp, great build quality
poor (but better than average in class) aperture, somewhat awkward to MF, visible distortion at 18mm

Today even the kit lenses are (mostly) decent performers and this lens is no exception. My wife has it on her NEX-3 but I’m using this camera sometimes as well — enough to make an impression.
The build quality is very good; the only (minor) reasons that prevent me from giving it a «10» are the slightly wobbly plastic inner tube, the slippery metal of the rings that sometimes makes them difficult to turn (esp. when wearing gloves), and lack of distance scale (which, coupled with the fact that manual focusing can only be engaged from the depth of the menus, makes MF rather awkward). The AF is fast, silent and accurate — not something we’re used to getting from Sony.
Optical quality is quite fine. Barrel distortion is visible at the wide end and there’s some CA. The sharpness is very decent overall, especially stopped down to f/6.3 or thereabouts on the wide end where the lens is insanely sharp. f/3.5-5.6 aperture is nothing to write home about although this lens is better than most here because it maintains the f/4.5 aperture up to about 48 or 50 mm — not bad! To a point this can be offset by the ability of the NEX to go to very high ISO levels.
All in all, a very worthy representative of the kit lens category.

    very sharp, lightweight
Difficult to autofocus when used for rapid, candid, interior photography

My overall rating of 4 is for those occasions when I’m using the lens for rapid, point-and-shoot *interior* photography with the Sony NEX 7 set to «autofocus», in poor to average shopping mall lighting conditions.

    Sharp, optical image stabilization, affordable
    sample-to-sample variability

I compared the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS to the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 on a Sony Alpha a6000 in various shooting situations. The Sony lens is 1/3 the price of the Zeiss, or less.
Surprisingly the Sony (with rev 02 firmware) focused quicker in low light than the Zeiss, and could lock focus in some situations where the Zeiss only hunted. As observed by another writer in this thread, updated firmware for the Sony lens takes advantage of fast hybrid autofocus on the a6000 (NEX-7 doesn’t have this feature). The Sony 50mm also grabbed more frames that were sharp at low shutter speeds, thanks to optical image stabilization, which the Zeiss doesn’t have.
This Sony 50mm is inferior to the optically superb Zeiss 55mm in contrast, color rendition, and flare resistance. But I had to look closely and repeatedly on a well-calibrated 27-inch monitor to see the difference.
Admittedly, I had to try three samples of the Sony lens to find one that performed to full potential. The first two were sharp at center, but fell off towards one side of the frame or the other at wider apertures.
Comparing these two lenses is apples-and-oranges, because the Zeiss 55mm covers full frame, the Sony 50 mm only APS-C. You could say I took the Zeiss slumming by comparing it to this much cheaper Sony lens. Still, I was surprised by how well my cherry-picked sample of the Sony 55mm f1.8 OSS performed.

    Inconsistant production quality

Bought this lens as a short portrait and landscape lens.
It`s very sharp indeed even ad full aperture, which is a fast 1.8.
There are some issues with mechanical noise, i brought 1 back to the store which had severe mechanical noise, my current also has some noise but not that bad.
The focus ring turns very smooth and feels right.
I`m very pleased with the image quality which is contrasty and clear, the OSS makes this already fast lens even better which is incredible.

I think nothing to be complained about this lens. I use this along with the 16/2.8 and Sigma 30/2.8 (as a normal lens), and they never let me down.

Bottom Line

SEL50F18 is almost a perfect fast prime, in my opinion. It is the cheapest among its E-mount lenses (SGD 449), built-in with an OSS image stabilizer, excellent control in the distortion, vignetting, and CA, smooth and buttery circular Bokeh effect, and the surprisingly good sharpness from its widest open.

If I have to pick the cons for this lens, I would say its auto-focusing is not perfect. Please don’t take me wrong. Its autofocus works silently, fast, and accurately most of the time, including the low light situation, but not all the time. It sometimes changes/refuses to focus on the subject you aim to, so you either have to use the Direct-Manual Focus (DMF) or change to the Manual Focus (MF) to adjust the focusing.

With a price of SGD 449, and excellent optical performance, the Sony E-mount SEL50F18 is a steal for E-mount users. The SEL5018 is capable of producing lovely portrait shots due to its 75 mm equivalent focal length. It took me some time to get used to the focal length initially, but I found that it is so handy in street photography once I am familiar with it.

Before I end this review, let’s look at some shots taken by this fantastic SEL50F18 below.
