Who Is the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM For?
This lens is for everybody who basically wants to replace the kit lens that came with their camera. Its size is ideal for quick grab-and-go shoots, photojournalism, street, documentary, and even event photography.
Even if it can’t entirely hide the fact that you’re carrying a bulky DSLR, it makes it somewhat less intrusive and frightening. This helps with portraits, especially candid shots.
It also helps to get into places where a large camera wouldn’t normally be allowed. I got away with shooting concerts on several occasions with this lens and my 5D camera.
Still, the 50mm f/1.8 STM gives you similar advantages, even if it’s a bit larger. But after using both for years, there are several reasons I chose the 40mm.
First, that small size difference does matter. And the 40mm has the advantage there. Second, I don’t shoot portraits as often as street photography. Corner sharpness is key with the latter, so the 40mm won again. Plus, it’s a little bit sturdier built.
But I don’t recommend this lens for crop sensor cameras. The 40mm focal length is not very convenient on a crop sensor, at least in my experience. Choose the 24mm f/2.8 STM instead, which is the 40mm’s little sibling.

Refocusing during movie recording
The stepper motor used by the 40mm should in principle allow silent refocusing during movie recording. Canon’s latest touchscreen EOSs (the 650D/T4i, 700D/T5i, 100D/Rebel SL1 SLRs, and mirrorless EOS M) aim to make the most of this by enabling touch-controlled focus ‘pulling’ in video — you simply tap the screen during recording to tell the camera where you want it to focus.
The company’s ‘Hybrid’ focus system works by using phase-detect elements on the imaging sensor to determine the direction the lens should start moving to focus. Then as it reaches the target point, contrast-detection AF takes over to fine-tune correct focusing. The examples below give an idea of how well this system works, using the EOS 100D (whose sensor offers a wider array of phase detect elements compared to the other cameras).
Video example 1
This example is shot in a quiet indoor environment, with close range subjects, and in M mode with the aperture set to F2.8. Focus is switched from the foreground to the background, then back. This illustrates just how quiet the lens’s focus motor is — it’s barely audible at all. But refocusing isn’t especially impressive here — the contrast detect ‘fine tune’ stage is particularly visible.

Video example 2
This example is again shot at F2.8 on the EOS 100D, but in an outdoor environment. The foreground subject distance is about 1m, and the background around 100m. Focus starts on the foreground, and switched to the background, then to the foreground, then the background again. Any focus noise is entirely drowned out by ambient noise, but again the focusing itself isn’t particularly decisive.

Value for Money
This lens is fairly unique for Canon cameras and the price of around £230 seems fair considering the optical performance. The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens is available from Harrison Cameras.
Canon’s EF 50mm f/1.8 lens may be a suitable alternative for those on a budget, especially as it weights about the same. Even though it isn’t as compact or as well built as the 40mm lens, it is considerably cheaper at around £90 and has a maximum aperture over a stop faster.
Also, for around the same price, the Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro lens can be picked up. Although this lens is a little bulkier than this 40mm optic, it does allow close focusing and 1:2 magnification.

Despite being compact and lightweight, this lens is very solidly built. The lens barrel is constructed from high quality plastics and the lens mount is made of metal. When mounted on a camera, such as the Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII used for testing, the lens only protrudes from the body by around half an inch, which should make it the perfect companion for smaller full frame bodies, such as the EOS 5D series cameras, or even compact entry level models. Here the 1.6x crop factor will result in a field of view equivalent to a short telephoto 64mm lens.
Autofocus is very swift and precise. A feint noise is made by the motor during focusing, which sounds not unlike what robots do in sci-fi films, but it is certainly quiet enough to cause very few issues. Unlike Canon’s USM lenses, full time manual override is possible by keeping the shutter button half depressed whilst focusing, rather than just grabbing the focus ring at any time. A thin manual focus ring, which is damped just enough, provides control for this. A small switch on the side of the lens allows switching between manual and autofocus quickly.
Focusing isn’t performed internally, but the 52mm filter thread doesn’t rotate either, making this lens ideal for use with polarising and graduated filters.
Specific image quality issues
As always, our studio tests are backed up by taking hundreds of photographs with the lens across a range of subjects, and examining them in detail. This allows us to confirm our studio observations, and identify any other issues which don’t show up in the tests. Here we’re looking at issues specific to APS-C users; for a fuller picture, be sure to read the next page too.
Lateral Chromatic Aberration
The 40mm’s CA profile means that colour fringing towards the corners of the frame is slightly more visible on APS-C compared to full frame, but most of the time you’ll struggle to see it. All recent Canon SLRs can correct it in their JPEG processing too, but older models won’t; however it’s easy enough to correct in post-processing if you shoot RAW.
The example below illustrates this using RAW conversions from an EOS 650D file. Without CA correction there’s a little red/cyan fringing in the corner of the frame, although it’s only just visible even in a 100% crop. Turn on CA correction and the fringing is essentially eliminated.

Weighing a mere 130g and measuring 22.8cm in length, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is one of the tiniest lenses that Canon offers. You can use it on a Canon EOS APS-C body like the 700D that we tested it with for a short-telephoto 64mm equivalent angle of view, and it also balances well on a full-frame camera like the EOS 6D, providing a more «normal» field of view.

As you would expect from such an inexpensive lens, build quality is good rather than outstanding. The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM feels solid in your hand, despite the all-plastic construction, with a metal mount adding to the solidity. The focusing ring is very narrow but has a ridged, rubberised grip band that assists with the finger-tip operation.

The only other control on the lens barrel is a focus mode switch with the usual AF/MF settings. Note that this lens offers full-time manual focusing even when AF is selected.

The lens doesn’t ship with either a lens hood or a protective bag. It accepts 52mm filters.
At the 40mm focal length the angle of view is 57°30′.

Focusing
Given its tiny size, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens understandably has a very narrow focusing ring. Manual focusing is of the electronically-driven, ‘focus-by-wire’ type, more typically found on compact system cameras. There are no hard stops at either ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 52mm filter thread doesn’t rotate on focus.
When it comes to auto-focusing, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM zoom is a fairly slow performer, taking about 0.3 seconds to lock onto the subject when mounted on the Canon EOS 700D that we tested it with.
We didn’t experience too much «hunting» though, either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing almost all of the time. It’s also a quiet performer, thanks to the built-in STM (Stepping Motor), which makes this lens well-suited to video recording.
Chromatic Aberrations
Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are impressively well controlled with this lens — the examples below show the worst-case scenario.
Light Fall-off
With the lens wide open at f/2.8, you can’t really see any light fall-off in the corners, and distortion is also very well controlled.
Macro
The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is not really a macro lens, but the close-focus point is a useful 30cm from the film/sensor plane, and Canon quotes a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.18x for the lens. The following example illustrates how close you can get to the subject, in this case a CompactFlash card.
Close-up performance
Bokeh
Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. One of the reasons to buy a fast lens is to be able to isolate the subject from the background, and the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM has an iris diaphragm with 7 rounded blades for a pleasing rendering of the out-of-focus highlights. At maximum aperture, sharpness in the centre of the frame is already excellent, with clarity towards the edges approaching very good levels. Stopping the lens down improves sharpness across the frame, with clarity across the frame peaking at f/4.

Chromatic aberrations are virtually non-existent, remaining under half a pixel width in size at all apertures. This extremely low level of CA, should pose no issues, even in large prints, or harsh crops from the edges of the frame.

Chromatic aberration is the lens’ inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software. |
As is quite common for lenses of this type, falloff of illumination towards the corners is quite pronounced. At f/2.8 the corners of the frame are 2.1 stops darker than the image centre and visually uniform illumination isn’t achieved until f/8.
Distortion is well controlled, with Imatest only detecting 0.5% barrelling. This low level of distortion should pose few issues for normal shooting. If absolutely straight lines are paramount, then you’ll be glad to hear that the distortion pattern is uniform across the frame, which should make corrections relatively straightforward to apply.
No issues with flare were encountered during testing, with only a slight loss of contrast being noticeable when shooting directly into the light at wide apertures.

Today, it’s the smallest lens available for Canon DSLRs along with the almost-equivalent crop sensor lens, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. The latter was my first lens ever. So it seemed reasonable to purchase the 40mm when I switched to full frame cameras.
Besides the convenient size, the 40mm is excellent optically. It outperforms its closest alternative, the 50mm f/1.8, even at f/2.8.
Another advantage it has over the nifty fifty is better close-up performance. Even by default, it’s capable of slightly better magnification. But with extension tubes, the gap broadens.
The 40mm, with its shorter base focal length, is a more effective macro lens. And it retains sharpness much better than the 50mm at close focusing distances.
