Performance
The performance of the Metz 48 AF-1 flash is impressive. Although we did not test the unit in all possible ways, the few shots we took demonstrate good exposure handling — the E-TTL at work.
The flash makes no noise during recycling. Head motor produces some buzzing, but it’s nothing to be annoyed by.
The recycling time is only 3.5 seconds at full power, which gives a better chance not to miss another precious moment while your flash is getting ready. For some reason, some web-sites say that this flash requires 5 seconds to recycle. The manual we have says 3.5 seconds. To verify which number is correct, we did a quick check. To our satisfaction, the unit recharges in about 3.5 seconds after firing at full power.
In dim light conditions, auto focus assist beam did help. We, however, expected a bit better performance.
If your camera can communicate with flash units about the size of its image sensor, these units will understand this information and adjust the light output accordingly. This is helpful unless you have a top-of-the-line DSLR with a full-frame sensor.
How we chose these DSLRs
We’ve tried and tested every DSLR on this list, and we’ve only picked the best models to feature on this page. While it’s true that the main manufacturers are no longer developing new DSLR bodies, the models listed here are still being produced and are still available brand new with warranties to reflect that.
It’s impossible to include the right camera for everyone’s needs but we’ve tried to include a wide spread of options at various price points to cover as many bases as possible. Whether you’re just getting started in photography, or you’re a seasoned pro, you’ll likely find a good option on our list.
Controls
The buttons on the unit have very nice tactile feeling. They are neither too small nor too big — they are just right. There are only four of them to fully control the unit. The downside of it is that to select something on the display you need to press two buttons. The idea behind this choice of interface is probably the prevention of an accidental change of settings, which may easily happen when only one button is to be pushed. The price for that is the necessity to use two fingers (and probably two hands) to change the settings. So, this approach has the right to live, and it’s up to each user to decide whether it is acceptable or not.
Build Quality (4 out of 5)
Metz have made a very solid and clean looking flash unit. The ‘Made in Germany’ moniker is stamped proudly below the flash head on the rear of the camera, and anyone familiar with German manufacturing techniques will know that this is essentially a stamp of quality. Everything works just as it should, and nothing is loose or badly fitted. The flash fits securely to my Nikon D90 via the twist collar lock, and I have had no problems with maintaining the electrical connection between camera and flash.
The only complaints I have, in terms of build quality, are small. The battery door is a little stiff to open and close, but this may get better over time, and the power button on the back of the Metz 48 could be a little more positive with its on/off action. I have had no problems with the power switch, it just could have been firmer, in my opinion.
Everything else works exactly as it should. The auto zoom quickly and quietly finds its range, the tilt and swivel head works great, and the flip out reflector and diffuser are easy to operate.

Functionality

Modes of operation
- M — manual selection of the flash output power. Unfortunately, only 1/1 (full power), 1/2 (half power), 1/8 and 1/32 power are available.

My experience
To start:
For a long time I used the products of the German company Metz and was satisfied with it.
A common weakness of these outbreaks is flimsy battery compartments. As for the disadvantages of the Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-2, then:
- the battery compartment is inconveniently implemented in it — you need to look closely, or remember the location of the polarities for the batteries.
- inconvenient way to fix the flash on the camera. The clamping mechanism does not allow you to quickly remove or install the flash. Native Speedlight SB series flash units have a special locking lever, which allows you to quickly and painlessly fix the flash in the hot shoe of the camera.
- there is no temporal button-lock for turning the head. Over time, especially with active use, the flash head begins to spontaneously change its horizontal angle. The temporal gray buttons are just tricks, part of the body design, copying the original flashes.
- it is very inconvenient to get and install a reflector card and / or a diffuser card
- there’s not even a hundredth of the functionality that Nikon’s original flash units are capable of. At the same time, the cost of the Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-2 is not so small.
Almost half the price you can buy a similar flash Yongnuo Speedlite YN468-II (i-TTL version for Nikon), or Yongnuo YN565EX (Nikon version ‘N’, about $ 80), which I actually recommend over the Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-2.

Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-2 is a simple, not very expensive (but also not cheap) flash with very clear controls. Powerful enough, not heavy with a basic set of functions for basic photography tasks.

Additional notes
One minor thing that caught our attention is the inscription right above the knurled nut. It says «for Can». Our unit is the «C» model designed for the Canon cameras, so, obviously, «Can» stands for «Canon». Why isn’t the whole word «Canon» printed on the unit? There is plenty of space. Of course it affects nothing, but looks a bit ugly to us. Well… we are sure they had their reasons (trademark issues or something like that).
Also, we have to mention that there is no pouch included with the flash. Off camera shoe stand is not included, as well. All you get is the flash itself and the manual (for the units they sell in the United States).
Finally, let us note that currently Metz makes 48 AF-1 for Canon E-TTL II, Nikon i-TTL, Pentax & Samsung SLR Cameras, Sony Alpha Series (former Konica Minolta SLRs), and Olympus & Panasonic SLR Cameras. Thus, Mecablitz 48 AF-1 can be a great alternative to units like Nikon SB-600 or Canon 430EX II, for example.

Подготовка техники
Процесс подготовки редко описывают подробно, хотя здесь кроется немало подводных камней. Для работы с внешними вспышками нужно решить несколько вопросов:
- Крепление вспышки на штативе. Существует несколько переходников, позволяющих закрепить вспышку на стандартный штатив.
- Использование светоформирующих насадок. Вспышка без насадки — это точечный и жёсткий источник света, и в большинстве случаев этого недостаточно для работы.
Эти две проблемы нам удалось легко решить, используя комплект SoftBox от Lastolite.
Помимо самого софтбокса в комплекте идёт насадка, которая позволяет установить вспышку на штатив. Таким образом, не устанавливая сам софтбокс, вы можете крутить вспышку так, как вам нужно.
Какой штатив использовать для вспышки. Портативные штативы очень лёгкие и могут упасть при сильном ветре, а большие штативы очень громоздкие. В нашем случае мы выбрали более мощные штативы, чтобы не беспокоиться относительно ветра.
Чем запускать вспышки. Все камеры Nikon, включая новую D800, имеют возможность управлять удалёнными вспышками с помощью встроенной вспышки, ею мы и решили воспользоваться. Ведь она довольно слабая, и мы сможем проверить чувствительность приёмника в Metz 44 AF-1 digital.
Кстати, вспышки питаются от четырёх батареек АА. Мы взяли по два комплекта на каждую вспышку.

This feature packed Metz flash has all that you need to create professional looking flash photographs. The head tilts and swivels and comes with a built in pop up reflector (see picture below). The integrated power zoom covers a 24-105mm range, but a flip out flash diffuser allows you to achieve an 18mm wide angle coverage if you need it. The rear LCD display lets you access all the settings and modes you need, including the wireless remote flash mode.
The Metz 48 AF-1 can be used as a slave flash and triggered remotely by your camera’s pop-up flash, or by another flash in a multiple flash set-up. Nikon DLSRs with a built-in commander mode, (D90 models and up from the current range), can wirelessly adjust the power of this flash from the camera body by assigning the Metz 48
one of the built-in flash channels. This functionality is the same as what you would get from using the Nikon SB-600, SB-800 or SB-900, but note that a flash stand is not included for table top or tripod use.
It even has a USB interface for firmware updates. This allows Metz to update the functionality of the flash and make sure that it syncs seamlessly with new models released by manufacturers. There has been several updates for each version of this flash, so make sure you check the Metz website to ensure you have the latest version.
A guide number of 48m/157ft for ISO 100 @ 105mm means that this camera flash is a capable mid range flash with power that compares well with the Nikon SB-600 or Canon Speedlite 430EX II. It is a flash with enough power to light all but the biggest rooms.

How to choose a DSLR camera
There are a wide range of DSLRs on the market, designed for everyone from casual holiday snappers to full-time professionals. That means it can be extremely hard to narrow down which one is right for you. Here are a few things worth thinking about before you decide on a camera.
What will you be using the camera for?
This will be the big deciding factor for most people, as different cameras are tailored toward different shooting styles. Some cameras offer extremely high burst rates for shooting sports, whereas others will give you a silent shooting mode to ensure that your shutter click doesn’t scare away any wildlife.
Think about how you will mainly be using the camera, and the specs that you should care about will quickly become apparent.
Which lenses will work?
For Canon, it’s EF-mount (including EF-S), for Nikon it’s F-mount, for Pentax it’s K-mount. Sony has discontinued its line in favour of its mirrorless offerings. There are some additions and exceptions, but those are the current main three. Don’t fall into the trap of buying the wrong lenses just because the brand names match up.
What’s the deal with sensor size?
Entry and mid-level cameras typically have what’s called an APS-C size sensor. Some pro-spec cameras have full-frame sensors that, because they’re physically larger, need specific (typically pricier and more advanced) lenses that are capable of covering these larger dimensions.
A full-frame camera collects more light and this will give you better low-light performance and shallower depth of field in your shots. Unfortunately, they’re typically a lot more expensive than their APS-C counterparts and the same goes for the lenses too. So if budget is a concern, we’d recommend sticking with APS-C.
Which focal-length lens should I buy?
There are plenty of things to consider with lenses and this all depends on the type of photography you are planning on doing. If it’s all about portraits you’ll want something around the 50mm or 75mm mark. If you are trying to snap that lion on the Savannah and don’t want to get eaten then you’ll want something with a long zoom, like 300mm or greater.
DSLR vs mirrorless — which is best?
This all depends on what type of shooter you are. If you mainly care about video, then the mirrorless options offer far more for your money and you should certainly consider them before committing to a DSLR.
If you’re on a tight budget, you can typically find entry-level DSLRs for cheaper than their mirrorless equivalents. This will leave you with more to spend on lenses, arguably the best investment in the photographic world.
